I just had a long talk with Diana about the argument I had with Rob yesterday and I don't think she got it. She kept saying that I was being aggressive and that I can't be rude with friends. I explained to her about tone policing and how it's right for people to get upset and that you can't just tell them to "calm down". That's a form of silencing people. At the same time she was trying to support speaking up and speaking your truth. So there's some cognitive dissonance there. We ended things good basically agreeing to disagree. But I hope something I said actually got through to her. At the same time I feel tired because I had to try to explain something she doesn't see while resisting her argument that's meant to silence me while she was telling me she wants me to speak up more. It's really hard when people don't understand what's going on.

I told her that I'm coming out of the box and I'm not going back no matter what. I told her that I love her and Rob and that I apologized to him if he felt disrespected, but that he didn't bother apologizing to me, even though he obviously offended me. At the same time I denied that I was rude and said that I will not allow him to justify silencing me. I told her that I'm glad we're being real and having an honest conversation though. I won't go back.

It hurts that my close friend is accompanying her boyfriend in telling me how I should calm down and that I'm overreacting.

It's interesting, but makes sense that things that Diana has been criticized for, she told me. I always admired that Diana appeared strong and didn't take shit from anyone. But people would tell her that she is "aggressive", that she has a "resting bitch face". Basically they try to tell her she needs to be more pleasant. I was complimented on how I'm "sweet" and people like that I'm soft-spoken, which basically means they like that I'm easy to walk over or shut up. Now that I'm coming out more, Diana is trying to push me back. Especially since she's become indoctrinated in Christianity the past few years.

It's like Sarah Palin syndrome. You get a woman who is charismatic, outgoing, and likes to take charge. But she supports things that would deny other women those opportunities.

In undergrad we did a polling activity in my theatre class after reading A Raisin in the Sun, to gauge student perspectives and reflect. We asked, "Would you move your child to a school with more diversity if it meant they would have more opportunity?" Many white people went to the side of the room that was for those who would definitely not do it. When asked why, they responded saying that they would be worried for their children's safety. One said, "I'm just saying I'm going to protect my own. It's me and mine."
I was so angry. I remember rebuking them and asking them loudly if they were afraid of me and other brown and black people. I left the classroom in tears of pure frustration. A young black woman got upset at the racist responses from the white students and a stupid snarky white woman made a comment to her friend making fun of the black woman for getting upset and stereotyping her. Not a single word got through her thick skull. They apparently read the play, heard minority perspectives and still understood nothing except white supremacy.

I felt let down by my instructor at the moderator because she protected the racist white opinions. As if all opinions are valid. She was a white lesbian, supposedly liberal.

If she's going to have that kind of activity, she needs to use it to actually get through to white students and push them on their beliefs rather than protect their opinions as valid!
