So I'm reading Daring Greatly by Brene Brown (who gave the ted talk we watched) and I'm on a chapter about shame. She interviewed men and women separately to ask about what shame felt like to them. Men talked a lot about failure and staying in the masculinity box.
You told me that you expected that I got a lot of terrible messages on OkCupid and I was surprised to tell you that I don't. I often get neutral or respectful messages, such as "how are you?" and "what book are you reading?" I get compliments on having a funny profile or inquiries on how my online dating experience has been. Anyway, I think part of the reason I get generally nice messages, is because by offering benefits and joking about making myself the protector, I take away a lot of the pressure that men feel to be hypermasculine. And I think they feel a sense of relief from that and respond accordingly. I definitely don't think it's my responsibility to do that or to make men feel better. But I do know that the internet is usually hostile to women and I think the reason I'm not getting the worst of it is because of my use of humor to disarmor.

I told you the story about the guy I briefly lived with and who yelled at me in Miami? I talked to him and a few times when I got back to St Louis and told him how upset I was that he yelled at me and then I blocked his phone number. He's probably harmless, but he does have PTSD, a gun, and anger problems, so it does worry me a little.

Have you ever had people ask for change who weren't homeless people, but just people trying to mess with you?

I experienced it three times now, and just wondering why people do that. First time was a well dressed couple who were likely not homeless and they were acting so weird it was obvious they were just trying to mess with me rather than actually needing help. Another time was an older lady going on her walk until I passed by her and she asked me in such a weird way too. That was a few days ago. And the third time was today, this kid with his friends asked me, but again it was really obvious that he didn't need it and just wanted to mess with me. None of the people actually seemed homeless or seemed like they actually wanted money.
